1. A leading U.S. Army general in World War II. In his 36-year Army career, he was an advocate of armored warfare and commanded major units of North Africa, Sicily, and the European Theater of Operations.
2. A career U.S. Army officer who became a general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He is best remembered for his participation in the futile and bloody assault at the Battle of Gettysburg that bears his name.
(Side note…my great grandfather participated in that assault.)
3. A career U.S. Army officer and engineer involved in coastal construction. During the American Civil War he served as a Union general, and is best known for defeating Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg.
4.First gained prominence leading troops from Virginia during the French and Indian War (1754–1763). Later became Commander-in-Chief.
5. He is remembered for his defeat and death at the Battle of the Little Bighorn against a coalition of Native American tribes.
