The south took a huge gamble in trying to draw out the Army of the Potomac into open battle on ground of Lee's choosing and if he won taking Washington and ending the war. If Lee's plan had gone his way the south would have won, but because of one of Lee's Generals getting a little nervous instigated a battle at Gettysburg, and history tells the rest.
