In 1863 from July 1st through the 3rd, the tides of the civil war turned against the South as the Confederates were defeated at The Battle of Gettysburg. On July 4th, Vicksburg, the last Confederate strong hold on the Mississippi River surrendered to General Grant and the Army of the West. After a six week siege the Union gained control of the Mississippi, and the Confederacy was effectively split in two, and cut off from it’s Western Allies.
Vicksburg was a physiological victory, but Gettysburg was the real turning point. The south took a huge gamble in trying to draw out the Army of the Potomac into open battle on ground of Lee’s choosing and if he won taking Washington and ending the war. If Lee’s plan had gone his way the south would have won, but because of one of Lee’s Generals getting a little nervous instigated a battle at Gettysburg, and history tells the rest.
it was the point during which the confederacy(north) invaded and took control of the mississippi river
