First of all there were only three days total to the Battle of Gettysburg. July first, second and third 1863. The North (Union)came into Gettysburg from the South and the South(Confederates) came in from the North. The Confederate army was looking for a source for shoes since a lot of their soldiers were marching bare foot. The Confederates met the Union army northwest of the town and beat them back to the ridges to the southeast of Gettysburg. The Union dug in and fought back eventually causing the Confederates to withdraw from the field. By today’s standards casualties over the three days were horrific. About one third or 50,000 soldiers dead or wounded. The Union won the three day battle. It is considered to be the “High water mark” for the Confederacy and from that point forward the tide of the war changed to the Union’s favor. It is also famous for the speech that Abraham Lincoln gave later that same year to dedicate the semitary there. It is known as the Gettysburg Address. Hope this helps.
